8 tips to travel sustainably and consciously
You want to travel more sustainably and consciously, but don’t know where to start?
Here are 8 ways to be more sustainable when traveling to put less of a burden on Mother Nature!
1- Ban Plastic
Avoid using plastic items like plastic bottles, cups, and straws. Get a set of bamboo cutlery bonus point if you get a reusable stainless steel straw. Use refillable containers as well.
2- Sleep Local
Stay at an Airbnb instead of a hotel. This way you get to know the locals. You also have access to a kitchen, so you can buy groceries at the local market and then cook at home.
3- Be Mindful
Minimize waste of water and electricity. Turn off the lights and AC whenever you leave your hotel room.
4- Travel local
Use the train instead of flying to minimize your carbon footprint when possible. Buy carbon offsets to compensate for emissions made when flying. Opt for public transportation instead of driving or using taxis.
5- Respect People
Respect the environment and culture of the place you visit. Learn and respect norms and traditions to avoid cultural missteps.
6- Eat local
While traveling, avoid packaged or fast food by eating at local restaurants. If you go out, bring a snack and keep the containers for restaurant leftovers or to-go meals.
7- Carry your own toiletries
Bring your own toothbrush, toothpaste, soap, and shampoo to avoid hotel freebies and reduce wastage. Bonus points if you already have refillable and zero waste packaged items.
8- Think before buying
Support small businesses by buying items made ethically and locally with minimum impact on the environment and people. Before buying souvenirs ask, if you would buy this if you weren’t on vacation.
